Candor

Disclose material assistance when letting others assume sole authorship would mislead them.

Readiness to state relevant truth plainly when concealment would be easier.

Candor states relevant truth plainly when a more flattering impression would be easier. In assisted writing, readers may mistake a finished page for a record of work you did unaided. Name the contribution that changes their understanding: an outline, proposed wording, a comparison or a substantial revision. Describe your own thinking and checking just as accurately. Clear credit lets the work be assessed on its actual terms.

An adult student points out an essay credit reading “My argument / AI: outline” to a teacher.

What Candor means when using AI

In a course that permits declared help with organization and wording, you submit an essay whose argument and source checks are your own. Your teacher praises the shape of the argument: “You have found your voice.” Some of that arrangement came from generated suggestions. You explain which help you used and correct the process note before accepting the praise as wholly yours. The essay keeps its argument; its apparently solitary author has acquired an accurate credit line.

Candor gives…

A teacher can respond to what the student understands, and collaborators can recognize what each contribution accomplished. Accurate credit makes room for learning and improvement without maintaining an inflated story of independent achievement.

Finding the balance

Too little

Accept praise for independent composition while leaving material assistance out of the account.

A fitting response

Explain the relevant assistance and your own contribution, and correct a process note that leaves a misleading impression.

Pursued too far

Bury the explanation in a record of every keystroke, including private or irrelevant material.

Disclosure must be informative enough to correct the likely misunderstanding. It does not make otherwise prohibited assistance permissible: the course, publication or agreement still has its own requirements.

In ordinary life

A work report

Name a generated first draft or analysis when colleagues would otherwise credit that contribution entirely to you.

A cover letter

Keep the account of your experience truthful, and distinguish help with expression from qualifications or work you do not possess.

Nearby virtues, different work

Integrity

Integrity keeps the representation honest; Candor speaks when silence would let mistaken credit stand.

Exactitude

Exactitude describes the actual scope of assistance without minimizing or exaggerating it.

Recognizing a counterfeit

A counterfeit of Candor is a credit that conceals its own subject: “Technology helped.” Say whether it supplied the outline, wording or another material contribution, so the reader can understand the work.

How to cultivate Candor

  • Notice what someone is crediting to you.
  • Keep a simple account of substantial assistance while working.
  • Describe your contribution and the assistance with the same care.

Try it today

Use a fictional essay process: the student chose the argument and checked the sources; a tool proposed the outline and revised two paragraphs. Write a brief process note that would correct an assumption of unaided composition. Assume the exercise permits that help; it does not establish the rules for a real assignment.

Questions worth returning to

  • What part of this praise rests on an inaccurate picture of the process?
  • Would the credit let a reader distinguish my reasoning from assistance with its presentation?

  1. I cannot, however, let this opportunity pass without expressing my deep obligations to Dr. Hooker, who for the last fifteen years has aided me in every possible way by his large stores of knowledge and his excellent judgment.

Charles Darwin, On the Origin of Species
    Introduction

Darwin names Hooker and the knowledge and judgment he contributed. The acknowledgment gives substance to “help” without pretending that it cancels Darwin’s own work.

  2. Another error is in the manner of the tradition and delivery of knowledge, which is for the most part magistral and peremptory, and not ingenuous and faithful; in a sort as may be soonest believed, and not easiest examined.

Francis Bacon, The Advancement of Learning
    Book I · excerpt

Bacon criticizes teaching designed to be believed rather than examined. A process note should make a contribution understandable, rather than use a confident label to close the question of authorship.

  3. Without the painstaking and generous assistance of Mr. Max Bennett Thrasher I could not have succeeded in any satisfactory degree.

Booker T. Washington, Up from Slavery: An Autobiography
    Preface

Washington interrupts the solitary-author impression of an autobiography by naming Thrasher’s assistance. The finished account remains his while its making receives a more truthful credit.

  4. Truth of intercourse is something more difficult than to refrain from open lies. It is possible to avoid falsehood and yet not tell the truth. It is not enough to answer formal questions.

Robert Louis Stevenson, Virginibus Puerisque and Other Papers
    IV.—Truth of Intercourse · excerpt

Stevenson distinguishes telling the truth from merely avoiding a direct lie. Letting a reader assume unaided authorship can mislead even when no explicit claim of independence was made.

  5. The Liberty was more directly and literally our joint production than anything else which bears my name, for there was not a sentence of it that was not several times gone through by us together, turned over in many ways, and carefully weeded of any faults, either in thought or expression, that we detected in it.

    John Stuart Mill, Autobiography
    Chapter VII

Mill describes On Liberty as a work repeatedly examined with Harriet Taylor Mill, although it bears his name. His account distinguishes the name on the cover from the intellectual and editorial labor behind it.

  6. For the third part of the book the Editor is responsible, though all that is valid in it he owes to authentic records and to the advice of Miss Sullivan.

John Albert Macy, The Story of My Life — Editor’s Preface
    Editor’s Preface

Macy separates responsibility for his section from the records and advice on which it rests. This is a precise account of contribution, rather than a vague admission that someone helped.

  7. I have used here and there translations of passages from these done by my friends, Babu Satish Chandra Roy and Babu Ajit Kumar Chakravarti.

Rabindranath Tagore, Sadhana: The Realisation of Life
    Preface ·
English arrangement by Rabindranath Tagore; preface credits translated passages to Satish Chandra Roy and Ajit Kumar Chakravarti, with revisions by Ernest Rhys; individual passage shares unspecified.

Tagore identifies translated passages within his English arrangement of Bengali discourses and names their contributors. Credit makes the transformation between source material and finished text visible.
